The below interactive map shows the opiate prescription rate per 100 individuals for each U.S. state.
As you can see, several Southern states top the list, with Alabama prescribing the most opiates at 143 prescriptions per 100 individuals. It’s unclear as to why there is such a significant variation of the prescription rate amongst states. However, it has been shown that this variation is not correlated to population health, and hypothesized that it is due to prescriber methodology and habits regarding pain management.
